About 'iodine supplements'|What supplements during pregnancy

I               am               writing               this               article               out               of               fear.

Every               time               a               new               study               comes               out,               people               jump               on               the               iodine               bandwagon               without               knowing               all               the               facts.

My               fear               is               that               after               reading               about               this               latest               study,               pregnant               women               and               others               will               start               supplementing               with               iodine               incorrectly,               causing               more               harm               than               good,               so               I               wanted               to               let               you               know               as               much               as               I               know               to               help               you               make               a               sensible               and               safe               decision.

Disclaimer:               I               am               not               a               medical               professional.

This               is               written               from               my               own               knowledge               and               experience.
The               2013               Study               on               Iodine               Deficiency               During               Pregnancy
It               has               long               been               known               that               iodine               deficiency               during               childhood               affects               cognitive               development,               but               a               new               study               published               on               May               22,               2013               in               the               Lancet               shows               that               even               mild               iodine               deficiency               during               pregnancy               affects               verbal               and               reading               abilities               in               children.

Iodine               supplementation               is               a               growing               trend,               and               I               have               given               it               a               try.

I               found               that               it               isn't               as               simple               as               popping               a               pill               or               drinking               a               few               drops               in               water.

If               you               are               going               to               supplement               with               iodine,               you               need               to               do               it               correctly,               or               there               can               be               consequences.
Is               it               Safe               to               Supplement               with               Iodine?
The               basic               answer               is               yes,               as               with               most               supplements,               it               is               safe               if               taken               correctly.

The               problem               is               that               most               people               don't               do               their               research               before               they               start.

There               is               a               plethora               of               information               available               on               the               exact               procedure               you               need               to               follow,               and               it               must               be               followed               exactly,               or               the               side               effects               can               be               harsh.

As               to               whether               or               not               iodine               is               a               poison,               yes,               it               is,               but               so               is               regular               table               salt               and               both               are               necessary               nutrients.

As               with               adding               any               supplement               to               your               diet,               knowledge               is               the               key.
How               Do               I               Know               if               I               Need               Iodine?
The               best               way               to               find               out               if               you               are               iodine               deficient               is               to               have               your               doctor               give               you               an               iodine               loading               urine               test,               which               is               expensive               if               not               covered               by               insurance.

There               is               also               a               skin               patch               test,               which               involves               painting               iodine               on               your               skin               and               seeing               how               long               it               takes               to               disappear,               which               is               inaccurate               for               a               few               reasons.

Prevailing               opinion               is               that               if               the               iodine               disappears               before               4               hours               is               up,               you               are               deficient.

Detractors               say               this               is               inaccurate,               because               75-85%               of               the               iodine               is               not               absorbed,               but               is               retained               in               the               dead               skin               cells               and               sloughs               off               during               the               24               hours               waiting               period.
How               Do               I               Take               Iodine               Safely?
There               is               a               14-page               guide               written               by               Stephanie               Buist,               NC               HC               that               was               published               online               called               "The               Guide               to               Supplementing               with               Iodine."               This               is               considered               the               Bible               of               Iodine               Supplementation,               and               needs               to               be               read               and               studied               carefully               before               attempting               to               take               iodine.

It               includes               information               on               the               different               forms               of               iodine,               how               much               to               take,               what               co-nutrients               are               needed               to               make               iodine               effective               and               prevent               side               effects,               along               with               a               lot               of               other               important               information.

I               suggest               downloading               and               saving               the               document,               which               is               linked               in               the               resources               section               below.

               My               Experience               with               Iodine               Supplementation
I               have               a               goiter,               which               is               why               I               wanted               to               try               iodine               supplementation.

I               made               the               mistake               of               not               doing               it               correctly               at               first,               and               ended               up               with               joint               and               muscle               pain,               kidney               pain               and               frontal               lobe               headaches.

Once               I               started               reading               more               and               learning,               I               cut               my               dosage               back               to               the               bare               minimum               and               added               the               co-nutrients.

I               have               had               a               few               detox               symptoms,               but               nothing               I               didn't               expect.

I               also               have               had               increased               energy               and               the               best               part               --               my               goiter               is               shrinking               noticeably,               in               fact,               the               swelling               in               my               throat               has               gone               down               by               half.
I               take               2               drops               of               Lugol's               2%               iodine               daily,               which               is               equal               to               10-12               mgs               of               iodine.

I've               found               that               is               the               most               I               can               tolerate               without               side               effects.

I               started               out               with               one               drop               and               it               was               a               week               before               I               could               increase               the               dosage.
               Where               Can               I               Learn               More?
These               are               the               places               I've               gotten               the               best               and               most               helpful               information:

Iodine               Supplementation               Support               Forum               at               Curezone               -               Read               all               the               recommended               messages               listed               at               the               top               under               "Read               this               first"               and               ask               questions.

The               Guide               to               Supplementing               with               Iodine:               What               You               Need               to               Know               to               Get               Started               by               Stephanie               Buist,               ND               HC                              Critical               Need               for               Iodine               Supplements               During               Pregnancy               and               While               Nursing               -               A               very               important               2012               study                              Too               Much               Iodine               May               Cause               Hyperthyroidism               -               This               is               essential               information.

I               implore               you               to               please               read               as               much               as               you               can               before               you               start               iodine               supplementation.
