About 'vitamins for skin'|Vitamin Supplements for Radiant Skin
Vitamin E has become a popular additive to skin creams in the belief that it can improve the appearance of scars and decrease the signs of skin aging. Vitamin E oils, gels, creams and lotions can be purchased at most drugstores for a reasonable price, but do they really benefit the skin? Does use of vitamin E cream for skin problems really work? Vitamin E comes in a variety of forms, including tocopherols and tocotrienols, and is thought to exert its effects by acting as an antioxidant. Because skin aging is associated with the formation of free radicals, it's widely believed that antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin E can help to offset some of the damage associated with sun exposure as well as improve the appearance of aging skin. Similarly, when the skin is wounded or injured, the inflammatory reaction that follows results creates free radicals which may be offset by application of vitamin E cream, at least theoretically. Thus, vitamin E's popularity as a cream for wound healing and scar prevention. Unfortunately, theory doesn't always hold up to reality. Several well conducted studies showed that using vitamin E cream on skin wounds failed to speed up healing or improve the appearance of scars. This was true for burns as well as surgical scars and appeared to be the case even when vitamin E cream was used for periods of up to six months. One study looking at use of vitamin E cream for surgical scars showed that some users actually experienced worsening of the appearance of their scars. Some of the subjects also experienced skin irritation and itching after using vitamin E cream. Disappointingly, vitamin E doesn't live up to its reputation as a cream for healing scars. In terms of its effects on aging skin, studies in mice have shown it can reduce sun-related skin damage and wrinkling when applied before sun exposure and can even improve redness and swelling after sun exposure, but the results have been less impressive in humans. One small study where vitamin E cream was prescribed for a month showed that subjects experienced improvement in both skin texture and wrinkling. Many experts believe that use of vitamin E cream for treating aging skin is more effective when it's combined with vitamin C, another antioxidant vitamin. The bottom line? Despite its popularity as an effective treatment for cars, vitamin E cream for wounds and scars doesn't seem to offer benefit and may actually worsen the appearance of some scars. In terms of its anti-aging effects, it's best used in combination with vitamin C creams and lotions rather than as a single agent. Keep in mind that there are a variety of forms of vitamin E in cosmetic products and not all of them are equally effective. In addition, use of vitamin E cream can cause skin irritation and even allergic reactions in some people, so use it with caution. References: Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice.
